Today's Must-Know

Snow covers the city of Denver

We Could Really Use the Moisture ❄️

Just when you thought Denver might never see snow again, local weather forecasters bring good news! A storm is expected to move through Colorado Friday and Saturday, likely bringing freezing temperatures, rain, and light snow across the Front Range. [9News]

  • How bad will it be? The Denver metro will probably only accumulate an inch or two. The foothills and other mountain towns could be looking at anything from 4 to 12 inches. [Denver Post 🔒]
  • Wait, aren’t we in a drought? We are! And that classification still holds. But here’s a little insight into the wild unpredictability of Colorado weather. [CPR; City Cast Denver]
  • Will it start getting wetter? There’s reason for cautious optimism. Forecasters are predicting chances for a super El Niño later this year, which could bring some much-needed heavier-than-usual rain relief to Colorado at the end of the year. Weather scientists are also holding out hope for an active monsoon season this summer. [CO Sun]
  • What about my new garden?! If you haven’t started gardening yet, the experts suggest holding off for a little longer. If you have, prepare your planters for a rough couple of nights. Need more gardening tips for surviving Colorado’s wild weather patterns? Tune into the recent conversation we had with our favorite local green thumb Ann Marie Awad. [Almanac; City Cast Denver]
  • Bonus tip: This time of year in Colorado is reliably windy and rife with afternoon thunderstorms, which is exactly why local meteorologist Chris Bianchi has some good advice for all your spring and summer travel planning. [Instagram]
  • Dress the part: Denver’s weather is always unpredictable. But during a drought that coincides with a potential monsoon, what do you wear? We've got some ideas ⬇️ 🎧

Denver Health sets the standard for emergency surgery

If you have a sudden, serious health problem, you want a team that knows exactly what to do, right away. That’s Denver Health. Denver Health is now the first hospital in the Rocky Mountain region recognized by the American College of Surgeons for top-level emergency surgery care. Denver Health is one of a small number of hospitals nationally to earn this distinction.

What that means: Fast, expert care when it matters most, for life’s journey.

What Denver's Talking About

🧑‍⚖️ CO Supreme Court Weighs Trans Care vs. Hospital Funding

The Colorado Supreme Court must decide whether or not to force Children’s Hospital Colorado to resume gender-affirming care for minors despite threats from the Trump administration to withhold federal funding if they do.

  • How we got here: After the hospital paused those services earlier this year, a group parents of transgender children sued for discrimination. A district judge agreed the hospital’s actions do likely violate the state’s antidiscrimination laws, but the risk of financially devastating the entire hospital system was heavier.
  • The big question: Now, the Colorado Supreme Court justices must weigh the tradeoff: enforce the state’s antidiscrimination laws or jeopardize an entire hospital? [CO Sun]

🪧 Talks Finally Resume as Sheridan Teachers Strike Drags On

Two negotiation sessions were scheduled this week between the Sheridan teachers union and district leaders over new contract terms. The teachers — with support from other school staff, parents, and even some students — have been on strike since April 1. They plan to hold the picket line throughout negotiations. [CPR]

⚖️ Live Nation Found Guilty in Antitrust Lawsuit

A federal jury has sided with Colorado and dozens of other states in a highly publicized, pivotal antitrust lawsuit, ruling that concert giant Live Nation Entertainment and its subsidiary Ticketmaster illegally maintained a monopoly over hundreds of major concert venues across the country. For its part, Live Nation maintains that its success is due to scale and performance, not smothering the competition. [AP via The Denver Post 🔒]

🏗️ City Looks to Purchase Empty State Office Building

The old Colorado Department of Labor and Employment offices in Cap Hill could eventually become affordable housing if City Council approves the $4.5 million purchase deal. (Last year the property was valued at $18.1 million.) Funds would come from the Vibrant Denver bond package, which earmarked $45 million for affordable housing projects. Council delayed its initial vote until May, requesting more information. [Denverite]

🗳️ Wanda James Officially Makes It Onto the Democratic Primary Ballot

Current CU Regent Wanda James has gathered just enough signatures to join her challengers in one of the hottest races in this year’s primary. Vying for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District seat, she will face off against 29-year incumbent Diana DeGette and first-time candidate Melat Kiros. The news comes weeks after a surprising turn for DeGette, who barely squeaked onto the primary ballot at the Democratic assembly in March, and will appear under Kiros, who had a strong delegate showing.
