⚽ World Cup Crowds Grow, Fresh Fees Frustrate Fans

The World Cup watch party series at McGregor Square was initially advertised as free, but after drawing large crowds at initial viewings, certain games now require a paid ticket. Soccer fans are criticising McGregor Square, developed by Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort, for charging more than $20 per person to attend certain games — a price that doesn’t include food or beverages. [Visit Denver; 9News]

  • Which games cost money? Upcoming viewing parties at McGregor Square that require a paid ticket include Mexico vs. South Korea on June 18, USA vs. Australia on June 19, and Mexico vs. Czechia on June 24. Tickets start at $20 but cost $23.18 after fees. McGregor Square says they’re charging for some games because it helps “manage capacity, maintain safe operations, and create the best possible viewing experience for guests.” [Eventbrite]
  • Local fans angered: Some Denver residents say they understand charging a fee to help with crowd control and to manage the “absolutely ridiculous” amount of trash people leave behind — but they feel $20 is too high of a price. Another fan responded by saying, “if they're gonna charge me just to sit there, f--- 'em. I'd rather go to a bar.” [Reddit]
  • Biker Jim himself will be at Skyline Park: Other downtown watch parties will stay free, like the daily events held by Skyline Park. A digital ticket is needed, but it’s free and gets you access to all games throughout the entire tournament. Biker Jim will be selling hot dogs at these watch parties — a rare instance now that the restaurateur has closed his Bikers & Bakers concept inside of Avanti. [KDVR; Denver Post]

🩺 Children’s Hospital Docs Won’t Resume Gender-Affirming Care

After a court battle, Children's Hospital Colorado has been ordered to resume offering gender-affirming care to youth, but doctors are refusing to administer it, fearing they could lose their licenses or face criminal charges. Clinicians cite repercussions providers have been subject to in other states — like clinicians in Texas being subpoenaed in criminal cases involving gender-affirming care — as a reason they won’t offer the medical services. Lawyers for the families of transgender children in the case say Children’s actions are shameful and accuse the hospital of throwing doctors “under the bus.” [Colorado Sun]
