🤥 Jena Griswold’s Qualifications, Integrity Under Scrutiny

CBS4’s Shaun Boyd took a closer look into Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, who’s running for attorney general. Based on what she found, three former AGs say Griswold might not be qualified for the job.

  • Lying by omission: Griswold has told local media outlets that she grew up in a cabin with an outhouse, implying it was the only means of using the restroom. However, a CBS investigation shows that the home had indoor plumbing in addition to the outhouse. Griswold’s campaign responded by saying, “At no point, did the secretary claim she didn't have indoor plumbing." [Yellow Scene Magazine]
  • False claims mount: Beyond the outhouse tale, Griswold has been accused of inflating her qualifications for attorney general. For instance, she’s claimed to have argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, but according to former judge Ann Frick, Griswold is not credentialed to do so. We’ve discussed Griswold's professional history on the pod before, and her own campaign says she’s only represented a single client in court, which critics say casts doubt on her competency in law. • Is she really qualified? A range of celebrities and political figures have endorsed Griswold for attorney general, including Jane Fonda. Opponents David Seligman, Michael Dougherty, and Hetal Doshi say she doesn’t have enough relevant legal experience for the job. [Jena for Colorado; Instagram; Colorado Newsline]
  • Opponents call out Griswold: Critics also say it’s telling that Griswold declined to appear on the local news show Next with Kyle Clark, unlike all three of her opponents. “How are you going to stand up to Donald Trump if you’re too scared to stand up to Kyle Clark?” Seligman asked.

What Denver's Talking About

🤐 Why is Gov. Polis Mentioned in Peter Thiel’s Secret Society Leak?

A data leak revealed a list of people allegedly affiliated in some way with “Dialog” — an apparent secret society exclusively for influential figures and the ultra wealthy. Dialog, created by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, had a cache of names hidden in its website’s code, including Ted Cruz, Jared Kushner, and Gov. Jared Polis. [Wired; Forbes]

  • We asked the governor’s office about the nature of his involvement: “No, Governor Polis is not a member of this organization, whatever it is,” according to spokesperson Eric Maruyama. “He does not know why his name is associated with the organization in any way or appeared on their website. He does not recall ever having attended functions hosted by them and has not previously heard of them.
  • Political commentator Ezra Klein, who was also on the list, calls the Dialog panels he attended “TED-talk adjacent” and calls the current conversation around it “a conspiracy theory.” [X.com]

⚽ Your Tips for Watching the World Cup

Some of you had thoughts about where to see the World Cup (or not at all). If you are tuning in, the United States will face off against Türkiye on Thursday at 8 p.m. MT.

  • Bruce’s at-home watch hack: “I watch it on Telemundo muted on the TV then have Trevor Noah's live watch party on the laptop. He watches with his friends and a celebrity. It is giving life! Loving all the positive stories about fans like the Tartan Army, and Lawrence KS adopting the Algerian team.”
  • Tyler suggests Lazo Empanada for Argentina fans: “I have bought many a good empanada there, and he has an Argentina game on in the background.”
  • Would you pay $20 to watch a game? Leslie says: “No. As much as we like ‘football/soccer’ we are sick of the politics and the hype.”

💻 Campaign Manager Fired for Online Impersonation

A campaign manager for CU Board of Regents candidate Edie Hooton was fired last week for posing as the parent of a CU student on Reddit. Hooton’s employee assumed the false identity to criticise Hooton’s opponent and challenge his credentials. Reddit users helped expose the incident, which Hooton called “an unfortunate lapse in judgment.” [Denver Post 🔐]

🚘 Two Different Cars Crash Into Denver Area Homes

In separate incidents, two vehicles crashed into Denver homes over the weekend, prompting renewed calls for safer driving in the Mile High City. One truck with a suspected drunk driver at the wheel crashed into the laundry room and kitchen of a home in Commerce City. The driver of the other vehicle, which crashed through a Lakewood garage and into the car parked inside, has not been located. [Denver7]
