| | 😭 What’s Being Done About Gun Violence? | After another shooting early Monday morning at a nightclub killed one and injured eight, Denver residents are expressing exasperation over violence in the city, especially among young people. The nightclub shooting followed a particularly violent weekend in Denver, with a shooting that killed one person in Green Valley Ranch, and another in Globeville that also left a person dead. Additionally, a shooting in the East Colfax neighborhood injured two, and a shooting in Congress Park injured one person and killed another. [Denver7; 9News; Denver Post 🔐] | - Youth killings surge: Recent data shows that youth gun violence is up in Denver. So far this year, six children have been killed by guns and 11 have been injured in the city. This is significantly more than last year at this time, when no child had lost their life to gun violence before July 1, 2025. [Denver Post 🔐]
- A legacy of gun violence: Yesterday marked 14 years since the Aurora movie theater shooting that killed 12 and injured 70. That catastrophe led to the creation of “Jessi’s Law” in 2023, which was named after shooting victim Jessi Redfield Ghawi and removed immunity from Colorado gun manufacturers, allowing families of victims to pursue legal action against them. [Sentinel Colorado]
- What else are lawmakers doing? On Aug. 1, a new state law is set to go into effect adding more oversight to the purchase of semiautomatic weapons with detachable magazines. That includes a required safety course and an exam with a hands-on practical component. [Denver Gazette]
