| What's Next for Denver's Tiny Home Micro Communities? | Monroe Village, Denver’s oldest tiny-home community located in Elyria-Swansea, has closed after nine years. This is due to city budget and permitting challenges, according to Colorado Village Collaborative CEO Jessica Ehinger, though Mayor Mike Johnston says that the closure of this 50-person village is part of a deliberate plan and not the result of funding cuts. Still, the decision has raised concerns about the future of this housing model in Denver. Former residents of Monroe Village have been moved to other safe, supportive spaces, and the tiny homes will be put in storage while CVC searches for a new site. [Denver7] | - This decision was made last fall as part of the city’s 2026 budget cuts: Johnston stated that Denver would be phasing out these micro communities, and that Monroe Village would be replaced with permanent workforce housing. Some hotel shelters were also among the cuts, as part of the mayor’s shift away from a shelter-first policy to combat homelessness. [Denver7]
- Before founding Monroe Village, CVC operated nine Safe Outdoor Spaces: This program was launched in partnership with then-Mayor Michael Hancock’s office in 2020 as an emergency measure to help address Denver’s homelessness crisis. In addition to shelter, these sanctioned campsites also provided food, restrooms, trash service, and more to hundreds of unhoused Denverites. Despite pushback from some locals who didn't want these campsites in their neighborhoods, City Council voted to make them permanent in 2023.
