Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Denver! I’m Molly, a part-time creative producer here at City Cast Denver.

One thing you should know about me is that I’m enthusiastically competitive about low-stakes board games, so I was pumped to learn about the resurgence of mahjong — that four-person tile and dice setup you might’ve seen on tabletops across the city. It’s giving Denverites some much-needed time away from their screens and lively debates about “house rules.” What should I learn before my first game?

Today's Must-Know

🚏 Your Guide to the Newly Opened BRT

There are a lot fewer orange cones in Capitol Hill as of this past Sunday. The East Colfax Avenue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) construction from Broadway to Colorado Boulevard is now complete and open to riders. Whether you’re taking a ride on the 15 or 15L Routes, driving, biking, walking, rolling, or zipping on a scooter, here’s what you can expect. [RTD]

  • “Bus-Only Lane” really means buses only: Denver police aren’t kidding around. The East Colfax BRT project team said drivers, cyclists, and scooter riders will be ticketed if they’re caught in the bus lane, especially in the next few weeks as the operations get going. [9News]
  • It ain’t a free ride: Regular ticket fares still apply. Payment options include Tap-n-Ride contactless payment, RTD NextRide app, cash (using exact change) or presenting your discount program pass. [RTD]
  • Bring your bike on board: Instead of loading your bike onto the front of the bus, board at the rear door and use the bike rack inside. For our visual learners, RTD made a handy YouTube video. [RTD]
  • Must-Know for Cars on Colfax: You can only use the outer traffic lanes, but the two-hour parking zones along Colfax and on side streets are free. [RTD]

My big question is, will the new services be more or less confusing for Waymo cars? With a history of getting stuck on Colfax, I can’t say I’m confident in their abilities, but I’m ready to be proven wrong.

❎ Lakewood City Council Votes Unanimous “Thumbs Down” on Flock

The City of Lakewood decided to end its contract with Flock and its license plate reader cameras after a lengthy discussion at last week’s study session. Roger Low, one of the 11 members who voted unanimously against Flock, shared on Facebook that they had “enough concerns about the technology” to remove Flock cameras throughout the city. The meeting recording is available on YouTube. [City of Lakewood]

😬 DPS Leadership and Board Member Disagree on Conflict-of-Interest Allegations

Denver Public Schools leadership, including board President Xóchitl Gaytán, raised concerns about Monica Hunter being employed by the teachers union, Colorado Education Association, in addition to her role as a school board member.

  • DPS leaders say that Hunter’s union employment makes them vulnerable to lawsuits in cases of potential conflicts of interest, whereas Hunter says the allegation is "retaliation" related to other school board drama. This adds to the already tense atmosphere among school board members, whose infighting has caused community members to push for investigation. [Denver Post 🔒]
