Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Denver! What’s that smell? Maybe it’s your neighbor taking advantage of cooler temperatures to burn the dust in their furnace, as someone recommended in this popular r/Denver post. Some say it reminds them of burning hair, others say it reminds them of … childhood?

💧 Seriously, Don’t Water Your Lawn

Denver Water increased its watering limits from two assigned days per week to zero as part of the Stage 1 drought resolution. Starting today, single-family residents can expect a $500 fine if they don’t abide by the new rule – and the cost doubles for each subsequent violation. This includes Arvada, Denver, Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, parts of Centennial, and all other Denver Water service areas. [9News, Denver Water]

  • Watering schedules or “voluntary reductions” exist in some Denver suburbs: The rules in towns throughout the north and south metro areas vary. Look up your water service district for more details. [State of Colorado]
  • Winterize those fountains, Aurora: On Tuesday, Aurora City Council passed an ordinance to limit decorative water features and turf grass installation. [9News]

🚁 Are Delivery Drones Coming to Northglenn?

Walmart approached the city in August with plans for a Wing “drone nest” at its North Washington location, and Northglenn City Council hopes to have regulations hashed out by the end of October. [Westword]

  • The pro-drone argument: Wing’s site launch manager says that drone delivery for convenience items could be more energy-efficient than multiple cars driving to the store. [Westword]
  • The hesitations: Some City Council members expressed concerns about sky traffic accidents, as well as surveillance and privacy. This month they’ll continue to work on a proposed ordinance that would potentially limit noise, among other restrictions. [Westword]

⛔ Colorado Files Lawsuit to Block New GEO Detention Center

Attorney General Phil Weiser is suing the Department of Homeland Security and ICE, asking a federal judge to throw out the GEO Group’s government contract that would allow them to build a new detention center in Hudson, about 30 miles outside Denver. Weiser’s suit is the third to file against the facility’s development since July, and the second to cite GEO’s failure to conduct an environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act.
