I think most of the clothing we need can be sourced secondhand. However, as Good Kid Collective owner Gabby Smith and I agreed in our talk a few weeks ago, shoes are like underwear: It’s best to buy them new. (Unlike underwear, lightly used shoes work, too.)
When you’re in need of a fresh pair and you want to buy local, skip the fluorescent lights of DSW and cop some dunks at these shops — because finding good quality shoes truly is an art.
👡 Pedestrian Shops (Highland)
Richard Polk opened Pedestrian Shops in Boulder in 1969 with a mission to sell comfortable, practical shoes while also doing good in the community. In 2018, Pedestrian Shops expanded to Denver, and Polk is now in business with his two daughters, Zoe Polk and Lauren Polk Brown. The family still stocks comfy, yet trending brands like Birkenstocks, Hoka, and Blundstone. A bi-annual shoe drive for communities in need, a commitment to sustainability, and decades of expertise are just a few reasons to check out this store.
Who should go: Shoes for the whole family!
👞 Dardano’s (Virginia Village)
No list of local shoe stores would be complete without Dardano’s. Frank Dardano began his retail journey back in 1938, when he opened a shoe repair store downtown. Today, the Dardano family continues Frank’s footwear legacy with two locations (plus a new store on the way) where you can find in-demand shoe brands like Ecco, Dankso, and Vionic, plus guidance on how to make shoes more comfortable with insoles and modifications. They still specialize in repairing shoes, too, with one of the largest facilities in the nation dedicated to fixing shoes with skill and care.
Who should go: Anyone who wants to look chic (but also comfortable), or needs shoes repaired
👟 Uncut Soles (Central Business District)

They’re known for great prices on a killer selection of hard-to-find shoes, since they source products both locally and nationally. Sneaker collectors come here to find rare Jordans and, in other cases, general rizz. Follow @uncutsoles on Instagram for information on one-of-a-kind shoe and apparel drops, or stop by the store — hours can be tricky, so check before you go!
