The city of Greeley has issued a local disaster declaration following last Thursday’s gnarly hail storm, citing more than $1.45 million in damages. Residents of Commerce City measured hailstones as large as baseballs from the same storm. And State Farm officials say they received 2,800 insurance claims from metro Denver customers by midday Friday.

In fact, Colorado apparently ranks second in the nation for hail insurance claims. I personally had to replace my entire roof after a nasty hail storm last summer 🫠 So I hope your cars, flowers, and homes were all spared! But if not, here are some tips for navigating hail damage:

  • It’s not too late to inspect for and document damage — check your cars, shrubbery, trees, roof, and siding of your house.
  • If you haven’t already, get in touch with your insurance company immediately to discuss coverage.
  • Be wary of non-reputable roofing contractors or “storm chasing” scammers trying to take advantage of the situation.
  • The State Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) has a helpful FAQ page that addresses things like legal questions, avoiding scams, and insurance jargon.
  • Feeling overwhelmed? DORA can walk you through the insurance claim process.
  • As you rebuild, do some research on how to make your property more “disaster-ready.”
