Tax Day (April 15) is looming — don’t get caught off guard. Avoid that procrastination panic and get your ducks in a row nice and early using these local tax prep resources.

Where to Start

The 2-1-1 statewide services database is a great starting point. Whether you want to file in-person, do it yourself online, or get assistance remotely, 2-1-1 can point you to resources that will help, including a list of tax credits you could potentially qualify for.

Make a Tax Doc Checklist

One of the trickiest parts of filing (at least in my opinion) is knowing what forms and documentation you need and where to get them. There are endless websites that offer handy tax document checklists. I particularly like this printable one from H&R Block.

Free Tax Prep Services

The Denver Asset Building Coalition offers free tax prep services and tax-related legal services for qualified low-income filers year-round. It’s currently hosting regular tax prep clinics at locations around the metro area.

Mile High United Way offers free tax prep services to low- and middle-income families and individuals by IRS-certified volunteers.

What About TABOR?

Colorado tax filers will once again get some bonus cash through the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. This year’s will amount will range from $177 to $1,130 depending on income and filing status. Here are more deets.

Filing Affordably

FreeTaxUSA is the IRS alternative to tax filing softwares like TurboTax or H&R Block whose filing services often come at a hefty cost. FreeTaxUSA offers free self-filing for most federal tax situations, and state filing for only $14.99. Additional support from tax experts can be purchased. Here are some details on how it works.

You can also check out this list of IRS-approved filing partners offering free federal and state filing options for people with an income under a certain amount.
