Is Denver’s Population in Decline?

00:00:00

According to state demographer Elizabeth Garner, the number of older adults (age 65 and over) in Colorado is trending upward quickly. In fact, it’s expected to more than double by 2050 — that’s a major change for a state that currently ranks as one of the “youngest” in the country. So whether it’s for you, your family members, or your neighbors, here are some of Denver’s best programs and resources for older adults.

This nonprofit home-sharing program matches older adults (55+) who have room to spare with younger individuals looking for somewhere to live. The arrangement is a mutually beneficial exchange of companionship and household assistance for affordable rent! Win-win.

This national program from nonprofit Front Porch connects volunteers with senior citizens across the country for regularly scheduled phone or video calls as a way to bridge generations and combat senior loneliness through social connection.

Denver’s primary hub for the LGBTQ+ community caters to older members with its West of 50 programming, offering fun social outings, special events, and educational / supportive resources for “healthy living and creative aging.”

DPL is a great resource for finding free programs, activities, events, and assistance geared toward Denver’s older adult community. Never miss a thing when you sign up for the Older Adults Services monthly newsletter.

Colorado Public Radio just kicked off a series called “Aging Matters” featuring conversations on things like how Colorado’s aging population will impact the economy and how seniors can combat loneliness.

Denver’s official office serving older adults aims to connect the city’s senior residents with local agencies and programs that assist with the care and culture of aging Denverites, including everything from transportation to support groups to estate planning and disability services.
