There’s truly never a bad time of year to plan a weekend trip to one of Colorado’s many charming little mountain towns (Breckenridge, Telluride, Vail, Frisco, Steamboat — the list goes on and on!), but summer tends to be especially idyllic. You can load the whole family in the camper, journey to cooler temps, and take your pick from myriad summer mountainside festivals and activities.

So today, I’m kicking off my official Summer Mountain Getaway Guide, starting with my personal favorite: Estes Park ⛰️

🏨 Where to Stay

If you don’t want to shell out $700 for a night at the historic Stanley Hotel, and all the Air BnBs are booked up for the weekend, I’d recommend checking out the Tiny Town Cabins — adorable and charming! Or grab a cabin or yurt at the local YMCA!

🍽️ Get Your Grub On

While you’re out strolling downtown Estes, grab a “world famous” hot dog or burger at Penelope’s. Want to eat in? Order Antonio's Real NY Pizza — the Sicilian pie is a can’t-miss 🤤 Tryna get fancy? Make a reservation at Twin Owls Steakhouse. And of course, save room for saltwater taffy, homemade ice cream, gourmet fudge, and old timey candy!

🥾 Take a Hike!

To state the obvious, you’ll find hiking, biking, rock climbing, and horseback riding aplenty in Estes, but the real crown jewel is Rocky Mountain National Park. Pick the perfect hike from RMNP’s dozens of easy-access trails of varying skill level and scenery, all just a quick 10-minute drive from town. For a scenic, moderate loop, I enjoy Lumpy Ridge. For a challenge, try Sky Pond.

⛰️ Hit the Highlights

Did you even visit Estes Park if you didn’t take in the birds-eye views from the Aerial Tramway? Or go ghost-hunting in the allegedly haunted Stanley Hotel? Or marvel at a blanket of stars at the Memorial Observatory? Or take an afternoon stroll around Lake Estes?

🛍️ Shop ‘Til You Drop

Looking for a special gift, a fun souvenir, a new Christmas ornament, or some kitschy collectables? Look no further than the shops along Elkhorn Avenue, downtown Estes Park’s main street.
